Structural Design for Non-Structural Engineers - Fundamentals of Seismic Design

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • estimate the probability and intensity of ground motions likely to occur at a site and their design implications
  • select an appropriate structural configuration for a specific site
  • identify earthquake design limit states for a structure and the level of ground motion appropriate for design at those states
  • determine the elastic response of a structure to selected loading conditions
  • evaluate the effects of soil-structure interaction and inelastic behavior on the elastic response
  • fine-tune a structural layout to achieve acceptable and safe levels of seismic response
  • identify procedures for the seismic evaluation of existing buildings
  • review design and construction strategies for the seismic rehabilitation of buildings

Target Audience

Structural engineers who need a broad introduction to seismic design will benefit the most from this course. Architects, building owners, facility engineers and others who influence the design, location, and use of buildings will also benefit by attending.

Civil Engineering Outline
The course will cover the following topics:
  • Impact of Earthquakes on Structural Systems Engineering Seismology
  • Dynamic Response of Single-Degree-of-Freedom Systems (SDOF) to Ground Motion
  • Multi-Degree-of-Freedom (MDOF) Systems
  • Modeling Buildings for Dynamic Response Analysis
  • Code Provisions for Earthquake-Resistant Design (New Construction)
  • Design of Structures for Seismic Resistance
  • Preliminary Design: Consideration of Building Shape, Material Characteristics, Connections, Redundancy and Damping Factors
